Using Sources

Using credible outside sources is a key component to good practice. Building on the work of others is the cornerstone of engineering and technical work; and to do so properly and legally, you need to give credit where credit is due.

We have included several types of citations systems for you to use.

  • APA follows an (author, year) system of in-text citation.
  • IEEE follows a bracketed numbering system.
  • JFM, from the format used by the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, also follows a type of (author year) system.

There is more help available, too, from the Cornell Libraries: http://guides.library.cornell.edu/citations
